CODA BLUE

SLIDER WORDPRESS THEME UPDATE:
The slider functionality of wp coda has been improved and updated and brought to you in a full featured premium theme, WP SLIDER. If you like the WP CODA theme, you’ll definitely want to check out WP SLIDER.

WP CODA has been a tremendous hit. While I no longer have the intention of continuing development with WP CODA – at the request of Panic! – I wanted to release CODA BLUE and the accompanying PSD as promised. This will be the last CODA release that mimics the Coda site functionality. While I may use some of the techniques used in this theme again, I will not be duplicating the functionality of the Coda site so closely.

So what’s next?

I developed this cms/news theme nearly a year ago and never used it. I need to update it to be used with Wordpress 2.5+ and write a unified plugin to make installation easier, but it’s a complete CMS theme in a news-site format. The purpose behind this theme is to offer a very basic-but-clean cms/news theme that is easy to customize.

I’ll also be re-designing, or rather, designing Bust A Theme to serve as a wordpress theme site so keep a look out!

Just thousands of thanks for share that wonderful theme

Hmm.. the individual theme image files are still the old purple. The only blue is in the .psd files.

Just noticed that the css and images were for WP CODA and not CODA BLUE in the download. The download has been updated and now contains the correct files.

Thank you Jeremy for pointing that out.

No, thank you Greg for your hard work! It doesn’t go unappreciated.

Very nice. Thanx a lot !

Hi Greg,

When will the CMS theme be available? Excitement is killing me.

Ty,

For now I’m going to have to go with “when it’s done” :)

Hi Greg,

Something is still no correct, the images are not displaying; WP CODA works no probs, when installing BLUE it fails, I think it is a CSS issue. I did a fresh install of WP 2.6.3 and it still remains an issue. Can you help?

Sorry, I love the theme, stunning – thanks in advance.

Its not working. I have downloaded, installed it and when I select Coda Blue as my theme the front end is just plain text. Please help.

If you’re experiencing a problem, open up header.php and change style.compressed.css in the head to style.css.

Great. Thank you very much!

Thanks to Gregs quick response, the following also worked:

Open header.php and change:

<link rel=”stylesheet” href=”/style.compressed.css” type=”text/css” media=”screen” />

to

<link rel=”stylesheet” href=”/style.css” type=”text/css” media=”screen” />

Great work Greg :D

thanks for the newsletter !

cool notice, great theme..i wish use it as soon as possible, but my site don’t need this style..so i want to have a friend to do his site jajaa

adeux!
from AR

a nice idea is collect sites that use this theme [or the originalcoda] and see what mutations has experience, the addaptation that webdesigners have done to use this theme in their sites

During development I thought I remember hearing that CODA Blue would be able to display pages & posts…is that currently working?

I’ve been waiting for this for a while now, thanks!

What font(s) are you using? I have to update them in Photoshop so i’m not sure if it’s the same font or not.

Hi greg, thanks again for the theme, great job
just one thing, would be possible to have the panel layer of the .psd without the white background? i mean just the frame..
so i could use it with different color bg, thanks
MAx

Greg, it is awesome what you have done… Thanks for sharing! I wish you could do themes for wikka wikki too, cos there are not any good themes for wikimedia wikka wiki and the likes, what you do could become an instant cool helpful hit just like this coda theme.

BTW in wikka wikki there are onlt three CSS files to customize
everything… http://wikkawiki.org/

Nice version… :)

Stupid question I know but I’ve downloaded the zip file and extracted it to my wamp folder so i can view the php fileslocally on my browser however it sez …

@twisted

You can only use this theme with a WordPress install. You’re calling a function – get_header() – that does not exist because WordPress and its functions has not been included.

I know that the cns theme will be done “when it’s done”, and I am in no way rushing you, but can you provide any indication that the theme will be done this year? A fellow blogger and I have a big website that we are developing- http://www.ConstitutionWatch.org, that your CNS theme would be amazing on. Is there any sort of email list to get on for notifications?

I was thinking the same thing, spoonTRex. I was hoping to see pages and posts being able to show with CODA Blue. Any word on that Greg?
Thanks for the awesome work you’ve done so far! I love the theme!

@Jeremy
I’d be more than happy to give you the current version. Just plan on using a half dozen plugins with it until the first release.

@BCBomb47
I had quite a few plans for CODA BLUE, but the folks at Panic! aren’t all that thrilled at the prospect of me continuing development on WP CODA and making it more popular than it is. I knew I wanted to release the PSD and because CODA BLUE was already done to that extent, I did so.

Thanks for the response. Are there any tips you could give me to get it working? I’m pretty familiar with Wordpress but I can’t figure out how to get the posts to work properly. Thanks again!

BCBomb47
For starters, open index.php and change:

<?php query_posts('post_type=page&order=asc'); ?>

to

<?php query_posts('post_type=post&order=asc'); ?>

From there it’s a matter of adding an additional containing div and allowing it to scroll. I chose not to do this because when a post or page is long enough to have scrolling content, the sliding effect is adversely affected. Try it out, see if you like it.

Greg,

The plugins are fine. I would be happy to get anything up and running to fool around with right now. Thanks!

Like I said, this theme was built between 9 and 12 months ago. Some of these plugins are completely unnecessary now. Once I update it to use WP 2.6.x I’ll likely do away with using all but a couple of them. But if you’re in a hurry and want something now, I won’t stand in your way.

I’ve tried changing that but I was hoping to have pages on the first few tabs then my Blog on the last tab. This looks like it’ll only show all pages or all posts. Thanks.

@BCBomb47

I see what you’re after now. Well, that is indeed possible. If it’s something a few people are interested in, I’ll do a write-up on how to do it on my personal blog.

Anyone else interested in learning how to do this?

any ideas how to fix the .png transparency issue on IE6 and previous versions?
i tried two plugins:
WP pngfix and Wp-UnitPNGfix based on he solution for the PNG trasparency provided by Unit Interactive Labs (http://labs.unitinteractive.com/unitpngfix.php)

both do not work with wp-coda because the script rewrite the div structure and mess all up :(
any solution?

thank again for a great theme!!

Greg,

Have a look at this my tab for the home page its selected even when its on a different page.

Thanks,

@gelkamar
I spent a fair amount of time working on solutions to this issue as well, but did not find one elegant enough. My 2009 (webdev) New Years resolution is to stop supporting IE6 though, and I suggest you join in ;)

A link to your site would be more helpful.

Greg,

It is on my Local Apache server which is not accessible by the internet.

It’s perfect for even a small business’ introducing site as well. Amazing. Congrat Greg. Thanks for make it for free.

That would be awesome Greg! Please everyone, tell him you want a write-up on how to do this :)

Greg, I’m with BCBomb47…I would absolutely love a write-up on how to do this. I’ll be waiting patiently (as I already have been). :D

This is much better than the other CODA theme.
Well Done :)

Also, that CMS WP Theme is brill. Is there any chance you could release this?

Thanks :)

Hello!

First, refering to @BCBomb47 comment of nov 10 and your answer:

“I see what you’re after now. Well, that is indeed possible. If it’s something a few people are interested in, I’ll do a write-up on how to do it on my personal blog.

Anyone else interested in learning how to do this?”

I’m interested in learning this!!

Second, I have a very related question:

this theme is so inspiring to me that i am wondering if there is a way to insert posts into one of the panels?

I have seen some plugins that let you add simple code into your pages, like:

[recent-comments number=5]

and that makes those themes very flexible

Is there by design, perhaps, a similar way to refer to single posts in wordpress?

This could be used to add a simple blog-function to a cms made in wordpress (one could post short texts and they could be inserted in one of the panels (but how to choose to display in only one panel????), with something like:

[insert-posts number=5]

I do not have the knowledge to do something like that (obviously), but wouldn’t it be a great feature to add to this fantastic theme??? After all, we are using wordpress, and the posts “are there”….

Do you all get what i mean?

I’d very thankful for any hints about how to accomplish this thing, and i am sure there are others who are interested in this.

Thank you Greg for all your creative ideas and themes!

Keep up the good work!

I would also be interested in being able to use pages and/or posts as BCBomb47 requested.

Its too bad the Panic people weren’t too happy with you continuing development on this project. I can understand their position since they do have a unique website style, but on the other hand, I never heard of panic before and I am starting to use their products only because of your references to them in wpcoda

thanks for the time and effort

I will indeed do a write-up on how to use a panel in WP CODA for posts. It’ll be a few days (probably not until Monday of next week), but I’ll do it for you guys.

Thanks heaps, Greg! I’ll be waiting anxiously, yet patiently.

Thanks for the great theme!

thanks, thats great. i love this theme. wonderful.

I would love to use this theme but it won’t install in my word press (2.6.3). I am using OS X 10.4.11, FileZilla, and dropping the wp-content folder onto the wordpress folder. The files transfer over, but when I look for the plugins and the theme it isn’t there. Is this a Mac issue or simply a newbie issue?

Hi Greg, I appreciate the work you’ve put into this, thank you!

You mentioned in one of your comments above that you saw adverse results with pages that included scrolling elements. I’m trying to include just that in my design, and when I change the .scrollContainer overflow to auto (invoking a scrollbar on wordy panels), it works on every recent browser except for Firefox3 Windows, where there’s a tearing/jittery effect when sliding from one panel to the next.

Is this the same problem you were seeing? Any idea what’s causing it, or if there’s a workaround?

Similar problem here :S

@stephen hey I figured out after searching through the comments, you’ve gotta copy the default folder in wp-content/theme/ from the original wordpress installation folder to your wp-content/theme/ folder. Then it will work, I guess from then on, you can go over to the theme to change over to coda. Hope it helps :)

Doh. User error. It installs when put in the correct folder.

Anyone have luck with using an email contact form?

@Chris A
That is precisely the issue I experienced when considering allowing scrolling content. There are a couple solutions I have considered, but none that I have spent any time developing and testing. If anyone comes up with a solid solution before I am able to and want to share it with the rest of us, please do.

@Greg Johnson

Late night last night trying to resolve it, no solution yet, although I was able to minimize it slightly by wrapping just the scrolling panel in a div with its own class (within the wordpress page entry space) and then setting it’s overflow:auto (while keeping the rest overflow:hidden). Instead of the graphical tearing in every slide, it only happens when that particular panel enters the browser area.

Maddening, and since it doesn’t happen on any other browser I’ve tested, should it be considered a Firefox bug?

There’s gotta be a way to get it working.

Thanks for the excellent theme. I’ll use it for my site.

Hi,

Does anyone know of an email contact form that will work with this theme?

s.

Wow.

Fast reply.

Cheers!

Even if I name all my pages using Permalinks, whenever I try to type in a href=”http://blahblah link into one page to be able to jump/scroll directly from one tab to another in the sliding box, it does not seem to work. Any idea what syntax I should use?
Thanks in advance for the help!

doh… I solved my own question by doing href=”#pagename” and it works!

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one having trouble getting the contact forms to work. I kept messing around with cformsII to no avail.

Can anyone explain why it is Contact Forms 7 works but others won’t.

I could take a few guesses at it.

@sommerlost
I would have to test cformsII to have an answer for you, but I’ve never had a reason to try anything other than Contact Forms 7.

Greg. This is awesome. Been working on my first customization through photoshop today. Getting close. I have a question:

1. In ordering pages: I know the code line is here on line 2:
‘post_type=page&order=asc’

I’m trying to get it to order pages based on the page order I specify in dashboard>write>pages. Any clues?

Do you know what would be amazing – if you could solve getting Instinct’s ‘wp e-commerce’ shopping cart to work with this theme (which has a sliding product viewer). The plugin creates several static pages by default which you wouldn’t want in the nav but they are picked up by default mucking up the theme. You should try pluggin it in and see what happens.

Is there an easy way to exclude pages from the sliding nav but still allow them to be called?

@scottAOK
While no further development will be done on WP CODA or CODA BLUE, I will give this some thought for WP SLIDER which is an upcoming sliding theme that is based on the similar techniques but does not mimic Coda’s site so closely.

any idea why the download link doesnt work?

Upgrading to WordPress 2.7RC1 broke a few things. I’ve fixed the download links.

It’s really a nice theme.
Cheers!

Hey! I really like this theme! But when I install it, I get only one “tab” … What happened here? (I haven’t customized anything yet)

Cheers,

Rich

Nevermind, I wasn’t awake yet. I forgot to publish my ‘own pages’ damn this is looking good and working! :D

thank you for your effort on this theme…

Hi,

I have noticed that the contact form Greg recommended (Contact 7) does not work with Internet Explorer 7. Can anyone offer a fix or another contact form that will work?

Thank you.

s.

Hi Sedgewick:

The answer to your page order question is:

change: post_type=page&order=asc

to: post_type=page&order=menu_order

Great theme! Now i will understand how does it works! thanks! :)

I’ve had great success using CFORMSII for Wordpress.

Wow cool theme :D , i will try this theme..

[...] Update: If you like WP CODA, make sure to check out CODA BLUE. [...]

Hi everyone.

I am need of help. I want to put a scrollbar in one or more of my pages as they do contain alot of text. Can someone please supply me the code and where to place it?
Your help is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Nevermind. Got it to work!

I’m using this theme for my portfolio, but how do I remove whats up the top? I don’t want to have the link to download the theme etc…

@mskate,

The code you’re looking for is in header.php and style.css. These files are located in the wp-coda theme directory.

Thanks Greg! do you have an email address? because I’m trying to set up the gallery on my portfolio site and I’m having major issues! :( could I possibly send you an email about it?

Thank you so much for this elegant theme! :D Including the source psd file was an added bonus. Cheers!

Hi Greg,

love to see the coda blue version. It‘s kind of sexy – i would say. Thinking about to make my own portfolio with kind of this theme. WIll let you know.

Keep on rockin …
… from Germany

I would love to have this recolored. Is there anyone who would be able to do this for a fee?

The page order fix from above…didnt seem to work?

order=menu_order

Didn’t change the order of the pages. Anyone have any ideas?

@ Jane. Sure, email me: natedefosses@gmail.com, and let me know exactly what you need.

Hi, Greg. The 3 links at the top only occassionally change on the hover for me, they don’t “light up”. Any fix for that?
Also any instructions to make all 3 of those have that pop up window? Just duplicate the div and the css and add a number (popup2, popup3) or is there more to it than that?
Thanks, great theme.
Oh, and for maybe include “blanks” for the images that everyone will want to change? Seams like that would be easier to edit than the PSD, trying to align everything…?

Good suggestion geezerd. I’ll put something together like that for the updated version, WP SLIDER.

beste theme ever!

I just wanted to say thanks greg for sharing this wordpress theme :)

Here is some .psd files that I made if anyone wants some blanks:

http://myweb.cableone.net/pcconnections2/psd.zip

stunning theme, thank you so much!

Tony and Sedgewick: I was also having trouble changing the order of the pages, but I’ve found a fix that works.
The pages display in chronological order, and you can use the date in Quick Edit to change the page order.
It is a little awkward, but it works.

I’ve just come to this site and I saw such amazing themes… And I’m glad to see that they are free and thank you so much for that. My site will be amazing when I establish my site. Thank you so much!!! And of course that I will promote you as much as I can :)

[...] came across a great theme today called Coda Blue from BustaTheme.com.  Any Mac using coders out there probably know about Coda from Panic, a web development app.  [...]

Greg,

I love this theme!

But I could really use some assistance on how to tweak the PSD files.

I have both Paint.net (with PSD plugin) and RealDraw4, so my tools are up to the task.

Just not me, apparently…)<;

I even tried techweiser’s offer of blank PSDs (above), but still no joy.

Every time I customize one of the files and upload them, they no longer blend-in to the theme.

Instead, each modified image (despite being the exact same dimensions as the originals) stands out in the theme as a separate rectangle, without that smooth blending in the stock theme.

Granted, I’m far from a pro graphics guy.

But in the absence of any other major discussion about this on this blog, maybe I’m missing something obvious that everyone else already knows?

You can see what I mean here: russguthrie.com

Thanks in advance for your help,

Russ

PS: Where are all the examples of sites that users have created? I’m sure they would be inspirational, so please share…

This is just great Greg – going through the code realy gives me a better understanding in how WP works!

Thanks a lot / Roland Stockholm Sweden

Hi, thanks a lot for this beautiful wp theme

Can anyone post the best solution for creating scroll bars? I can get the scrollbars working by changing the overflow to auto but when it scrolls the Title of the page goes under the Panel fine but the scrollbar is above the panel and the page text scrolls over the panel area…

Hi, nice posts there :-) thank’s for the interesting information

@techweiser: thank you so much!

@Greg: AWESOME theme!

It’s been a long time in development, and I know a lot of you had questions on how to make CODA BLUE do something specific. I’ve answered all those questions and more with our latest theme release, WP SLIDER.

nicely done greg. I love the WP SLIDER but have to say im more of a fan of coda. Nice work on all of your themes by the way :)

Very very thanks friend!!!

great. using on my small business site. thank.

This is the best free theme I’ve found on the web – and I was searching fpr a very long time! Very good work. I’ll use it on a SMB Website!

This is a great theme! I love the combination of the colors. Awesome work!

Excelent excelent!!!! This is a great theme! I love the combination of the colors.
Awesome work! Thank you so much….

Greg, you are the man :P nice theme

Great theme but I’ve small question : If the page is tall where will be the scroll bar?

CODA BLUE does not support content scrolling, no. WP SLIDER however, does.

Hi Greg, very very nice theme. By the way is it possible to add another jquery plugin directly to the theme? Because I want to have two content sliders, one for pages and another one for posts. I’ve tried to do that before but failed. Perhaps I could do that by editing/adding certain php code inside, but in my opinion it will be more efficient in time if I could use another effect from another plugin. So, is it possible?

@Aree,
WP CODA and CODA BLUE are both very simple in structure, so modifying them is fairly straight forward if you’re familiar with JavaScript/jQuery. I’m not entirely sure what effect you’re trying to achieve exactly, but I imagine with some perseverance you will be able to.

I figured/hoped/thought the popularity of the CODA’s would diminish after releasing the far superior WP SLIDER, but no such luck :) Because of this I’m going to make a true squeal to WP CODA/CODA BLUE to give it the functionality of WP SLIDER. Right now I’m working on the redesign and relaunch of Bust A Theme, so perhaps I’ll redevelop it and launch it with the new site. Perhaps shortly after. One way or the other there will be a proper successor to the CODA’s.

thank, thank, very nice theme!
