CODA BLUE WordPress Theme
WP CODA has been a tremendous hit. While I no longer have the intention of continuing development with WP CODA - at the request of Panic! - I wanted to release CODA BLUE and the accompanying PSD as promised. This will be the last CODA release that mimics the Coda site functionality. While I may use some of the techniques used in this theme again, I will not be duplicating the functionality of the Coda site so closely.
So what’s next?
I developed this cms/news theme nearly a year ago and never used it. I need to update it to be used with Wordpress 2.5+ and write a unified plugin to make installation easier, but it’s a complete CMS theme in a news-site format. The purpose behind this theme is to offer a very basic-but-clean cms/news theme that is easy to customize.
I’ll also be re-designing, or rather, designing Bust A Theme to serve as a wordpress theme site so keep a look out!

Hmm.. the individual theme image files are still the old purple. The only blue is in the .psd files.
Just noticed that the css and images were for WP CODA and not CODA BLUE in the download. The download has been updated and now contains the correct files.
Thank you Jeremy for pointing that out.

Hi Greg,
Something is still no correct, the images are not displaying; WP CODA works no probs, when installing BLUE it fails, I think it is a CSS issue. I did a fresh install of WP 2.6.3 and it still remains an issue. Can you help?
Sorry, I love the theme, stunning - thanks in advance.
Its not working. I have downloaded, installed it and when I select Coda Blue as my theme the front end is just plain text. Please help.
If you’re experiencing a problem, open up header.php and change style.compressed.css in the head to style.css.
Thanks to Gregs quick response, the following also worked:
Open header.php and change:
<link rel=”stylesheet” href=”/style.compressed.css” type=”text/css” media=”screen” />
to
<link rel=”stylesheet” href=”/style.css” type=”text/css” media=”screen” />
Great work Greg
thanks for the newsletter !
cool notice, great theme..i wish use it as soon as possible, but my site don’t need this style..so i want to have a friend to do his site jajaa

a nice idea is collect sites that use this theme [or the originalcoda] and see what mutations has experience, the addaptation that webdesigners have done to use this theme in their sites
During development I thought I remember hearing that CODA Blue would be able to display pages & posts…is that currently working?
What font(s) are you using? I have to update them in Photoshop so i’m not sure if it’s the same font or not.
Hi greg, thanks again for the theme, great job
just one thing, would be possible to have the panel layer of the .psd without the white background? i mean just the frame..
so i could use it with different color bg, thanks
MAx
Greg, it is awesome what you have done… Thanks for sharing! I wish you could do themes for wikka wikki too, cos there are not any good themes for wikimedia wikka wiki and the likes, what you do could become an instant cool helpful hit just like this coda theme.
BTW in wikka wikki there are onlt three CSS files to customize
everything… http://wikkawiki.org/
Stupid question I know but I’ve downloaded the zip file and extracted it to my wamp folder so i can view the php fileslocally on my browser however it sez …
Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_header() in C:\wamp\www\index.php on line 1
I haven’t touched code for a few years so I have no clue what I’m doing wrong.. please help :o)

@twisted
You can only use this theme with a WordPress install. You’re calling a function - get_header() - that does not exist because WordPress and its functions has not been included.

I know that the cns theme will be done “when it’s done”, and I am in no way rushing you, but can you provide any indication that the theme will be done this year? A fellow blogger and I have a big website that we are developing- http://www.ConstitutionWatch.org, that your CNS theme would be amazing on. Is there any sort of email list to get on for notifications?
I was thinking the same thing, spoonTRex. I was hoping to see pages and posts being able to show with CODA Blue. Any word on that Greg?
Thanks for the awesome work you’ve done so far! I love the theme!
@Jeremy
I’d be more than happy to give you the current version. Just plan on using a half dozen plugins with it until the first release.
@BCBomb47
I had quite a few plans for CODA BLUE, but the folks at Panic! aren’t all that thrilled at the prospect of me continuing development on WP CODA and making it more popular than it is. I knew I wanted to release the PSD and because CODA BLUE was already done to that extent, I did so.
Thanks for the response. Are there any tips you could give me to get it working? I’m pretty familiar with Wordpress but I can’t figure out how to get the posts to work properly. Thanks again!
BCBomb47
For starters, open index.php and change:
<?php query_posts('post_type=page&order=asc'); ?>
to
<?php query_posts('post_type=post&order=asc'); ?>
From there it’s a matter of adding an additional containing div and allowing it to scroll. I chose not to do this because when a post or page is long enough to have scrolling content, the sliding effect is adversely affected. Try it out, see if you like it.
Greg,
The plugins are fine. I would be happy to get anything up and running to fool around with right now. Thanks!

Like I said, this theme was built between 9 and 12 months ago. Some of these plugins are completely unnecessary now. Once I update it to use WP 2.6.x I’ll likely do away with using all but a couple of them. But if you’re in a hurry and want something now, I won’t stand in your way.
I’ve tried changing that but I was hoping to have pages on the first few tabs then my Blog on the last tab. This looks like it’ll only show all pages or all posts. Thanks.
@BCBomb47
I see what you’re after now. Well, that is indeed possible. If it’s something a few people are interested in, I’ll do a write-up on how to do it on my personal blog.
Anyone else interested in learning how to do this?
any ideas how to fix the .png transparency issue on IE6 and previous versions?
i tried two plugins:
WP pngfix and Wp-UnitPNGfix based on he solution for the PNG trasparency provided by Unit Interactive Labs (http://labs.unitinteractive.com/unitpngfix.php)
both do not work with wp-coda because the script rewrite the div structure and mess all up ![]()
any solution?
thank again for a great theme!!
Greg,
Have a look at this my tab for the home page its selected even when its on a different page.

Thanks,

@gelkamar
I spent a fair amount of time working on solutions to this issue as well, but did not find one elegant enough. My 2009 (webdev) New Years resolution is to stop supporting IE6 though, and I suggest you join in
Wade
A link to your site would be more helpful.
It’s perfect for even a small business’ introducing site as well. Amazing. Congrat Greg. Thanks for make it for free.
Greg, I’m with BCBomb47…I would absolutely love a write-up on how to do this. I’ll be waiting patiently (as I already have been).
This is much better than the other CODA theme.
Well Done
Also, that CMS WP Theme is brill. Is there any chance you could release this?
Thanks
Hello!
First, refering to @BCBomb47 comment of nov 10 and your answer:
“I see what you’re after now. Well, that is indeed possible. If it’s something a few people are interested in, I’ll do a write-up on how to do it on my personal blog.
Anyone else interested in learning how to do this?”
I’m interested in learning this!!
Second, I have a very related question:
this theme is so inspiring to me that i am wondering if there is a way to insert posts into one of the panels?
I have seen some plugins that let you add simple code into your pages, like:
[recent-comments number=5]
and that makes those themes very flexible
Is there by design, perhaps, a similar way to refer to single posts in wordpress?
This could be used to add a simple blog-function to a cms made in wordpress (one could post short texts and they could be inserted in one of the panels (but how to choose to display in only one panel????), with something like:
[insert-posts number=5]
I do not have the knowledge to do something like that (obviously), but wouldn’t it be a great feature to add to this fantastic theme??? After all, we are using wordpress, and the posts “are there”….
Do you all get what i mean?
I’d very thankful for any hints about how to accomplish this thing, and i am sure there are others who are interested in this.
Thank you Greg for all your creative ideas and themes!
Keep up the good work!
I would also be interested in being able to use pages and/or posts as BCBomb47 requested.
Its too bad the Panic people weren’t too happy with you continuing development on this project. I can understand their position since they do have a unique website style, but on the other hand, I never heard of panic before and I am starting to use their products only because of your references to them in wpcoda
thanks for the time and effort
I will indeed do a write-up on how to use a panel in WP CODA for posts. It’ll be a few days (probably not until Monday of next week), but I’ll do it for you guys.
[...] rilasciata oggi una nuova versione del Tema CODA, con sfondo e cartella colori sulle tonalità del Blu. Un tema [...]
I would love to use this theme but it won’t install in my word press (2.6.3). I am using OS X 10.4.11, FileZilla, and dropping the wp-content folder onto the wordpress folder. The files transfer over, but when I look for the plugins and the theme it isn’t there. Is this a Mac issue or simply a newbie issue?
Hi Greg, I appreciate the work you’ve put into this, thank you!
You mentioned in one of your comments above that you saw adverse results with pages that included scrolling elements. I’m trying to include just that in my design, and when I change the .scrollContainer overflow to auto (invoking a scrollbar on wordy panels), it works on every recent browser except for Firefox3 Windows, where there’s a tearing/jittery effect when sliding from one panel to the next.
Is this the same problem you were seeing? Any idea what’s causing it, or if there’s a workaround?
@stephen hey I figured out after searching through the comments, you’ve gotta copy the default folder in wp-content/theme/ from the original wordpress installation folder to your wp-content/theme/ folder. Then it will work, I guess from then on, you can go over to the theme to change over to coda. Hope it helps
Doh. User error. It installs when put in the correct folder.
Anyone have luck with using an email contact form?
@Chris A
That is precisely the issue I experienced when considering allowing scrolling content. There are a couple solutions I have considered, but none that I have spent any time developing and testing. If anyone comes up with a solid solution before I am able to and want to share it with the rest of us, please do.
@Greg Johnson
Late night last night trying to resolve it, no solution yet, although I was able to minimize it slightly by wrapping just the scrolling panel in a div with its own class (within the wordpress page entry space) and then setting it’s overflow:auto (while keeping the rest overflow:hidden). Instead of the graphical tearing in every slide, it only happens when that particular panel enters the browser area.
Maddening, and since it doesn’t happen on any other browser I’ve tested, should it be considered a Firefox bug?
There’s gotta be a way to get it working.
Even if I name all my pages using Permalinks, whenever I try to type in a href=”http://blahblah link into one page to be able to jump/scroll directly from one tab to another in the sliding box, it does not seem to work. Any idea what syntax I should use?
Thanks in advance for the help!
Glad to know I wasn’t the only one having trouble getting the contact forms to work. I kept messing around with cformsII to no avail.
Can anyone explain why it is Contact Forms 7 works but others won’t.
I could take a few guesses at it.
@sommerlost
I would have to test cformsII to have an answer for you, but I’ve never had a reason to try anything other than Contact Forms 7.
Greg. This is awesome. Been working on my first customization through photoshop today. Getting close. I have a question:
1. In ordering pages: I know the code line is here on line 2:
‘post_type=page&order=asc’
I’m trying to get it to order pages based on the page order I specify in dashboard>write>pages. Any clues?
Do you know what would be amazing - if you could solve getting Instinct’s ‘wp e-commerce’ shopping cart to work with this theme (which has a sliding product viewer). The plugin creates several static pages by default which you wouldn’t want in the nav but they are picked up by default mucking up the theme. You should try pluggin it in and see what happens.
Is there an easy way to exclude pages from the sliding nav but still allow them to be called?
@scottAOK
While no further development will be done on WP CODA or CODA BLUE, I will give this some thought for WP SLIDER which is an upcoming sliding theme that is based on the similar techniques but does not mimic Coda’s site so closely.
Hey! I really like this theme! But when I install it, I get only one “tab” … What happened here? (I haven’t customized anything yet)
Cheers,
Rich
Nevermind, I wasn’t awake yet. I forgot to publish my ‘own pages’ damn this is looking good and working!

Another great one Greg. I’m shocked by what you have accomplished into such wonderful collection.
Honestly, Bravo.
